Welcome to the art of Black Tiger Boxing.

Black Tiger Boxing is an ultra-traditional method of personal self-defense.

Within Xinjiang (North Western China) it has survived through centuries of persecution and change including some of the most recent as direct result of “The Boxer Rebellion”, the Japanese “occupation” and the formation of the R.O.C. as well as the P.R.O.C.

Within rural sections of North Western China, communal living was and still is essential to survival. Within these small village communities, certain families have specific responsibilities. Some focus on farming, hunting or fishing while others are put in “charge” of security and enforcement of local “village law”.

Once again, this way has remained constant for centuries.

All village activity is directly related to cooperative effort of the group and its members.

Here family is everything.

Black Tiger Boxing is the spawn of such an environment.

Legend states that the name “Black Tiger Boxing” derives from the existence of the rare creature indigenous to the North Western frontier of China (Black Tiger may also be considered a euphemism for the Muslim population of this same territory within China).

Legend also states that this noble creature has faced extinction many times.

Yet it has adapted, persevered and in-turn, survives.

This art is also sometimes referred to as “Folk”, “Village” or “Vagabond” style boxing.

Within Japan, this form of Chugoku Kempo took root within the Setonaikai and mountainous regions of Kyoto/ Nara where it was (and still is) sometimes referred to as “Shinobi Jutsu”, “Ninjutsu” or “Ninpo”. (Please see http://www.yagyuryu.com/)

All of these labels are correct, yet incomplete.

The practice and history of Black Tiger Boxing is better defined as a localized Jissen Goshinjutsu of Japanese and Chinese folk Tradition.

It was developed out of necessity.

The art is holistic in its approach and provides the practitioner with a “true” window into the mindset and survival patterns of the “practical” warrior.

James Benson has studied the art of Black Tiger Boxing since 1966.

Mr. Benson currently teaches his understanding of this art (as taught to him directly by Sifu Ma of Xinjiang) through his own art of Black Tiger Mountain Mist Shadow Boxing.

The practice of Black Tiger Mountain Mist Shadow Boxing is demanding.

It is a contact method of personal combat.

Participation will require dedication and self-discipline on behalf of the student.

Black Tiger Mountain Mist Shadow Boxing is not for the “hobbyist”.

Training in Black Tiger Mountain Mist Shadow Boxing evokes “Yushin” (the courage to proceed) within the practitioner, which mirrors the attitude and method of facing and in-turn surviving direct physical conflict.

The Black Tiger Mountain Mist Shadow Boxing method as taught by James Benson within the Bugeikan, is the end result of centuries of survival through proven personal combat.
